Another Summer Storm Strikes MPLS; Hail Damage in Anoka, Blaine, Circle Pines & More
Large hailstones struck Minneapolis during two storm fronts in the late afternoon July 26, 2019. The cold and warm air began rotating, generating strong wind currents, creating the classic recipe for hail. The hail indeed reached the ground north of the Twin Cities and in Northeastern Minnesota. Hailstones ranging from 1-4" in diameter, with an average hailstone size of 1.66", hit these cities:
- Elk River
- Big Lake
- North Oaks
- Circle Pines
The National Weather Service also listed these cities as witnessing hail on 7/26/2019: St. Cloud, Orrock, Otsego, Zimmerman, White Bear Lake, Ramsey and Mounds View, MN. Once these supercell thunderstorms began rotating with strong winds, the clouds unleashed ping-pong ball-size to tennis ball-size hailstones; Gravity pulls the heavy ice formations down out of the cloud churn. Shoreview listed hailstones as large as 3" in diameter, with Clear Lake reporting sizes of 4" hailstones! As many as 20,000 homes are reported to have experienced damage in the hail swath area.
